Café Tacvba @ Vive Latino 2012
March 25th, 2012
Kasabian played before main act Café Tacuba on the second day of Vive Latino Festival. Before Kasabian’s set, I was warned that Café Tacuba were going to play 5 songs in a stage in the middle of the stadium. When they started I was shooting backstage next to the media offices (right between the Indio ad and the seating section) but the shots weren’t that great so I had to move. During the second song I tried to get to the seating section right next to the Indio ad but getting there was impossible, since the exit to the general area was crowded, so I had to take another route. I headed the opposite way of the main stage so I could reach the other seating section, a route that with my poor condition took me another whole song, so I had two left, perfect for getting a couple of shots.
I got to the seating area and found a spot between some fans and now the second stage was right in front of me, with its searchlights pointing up. I’m not a big fan of the band but the stage and the vibe of the crowd made a huge moment. I took pictures almost all of the fourth song and then returned to the main stage photo pit, hoping to get a good spot before all of the other photographers were there. Shooting for the festival’s website gets you some perks, such as getting in and out of any stage photo pit at any time and even before the rest of the photographers. Halfway through my route back, the band finished their set with only four songs! I had to hurry or I would get a terrible spot, not even having time to check if my photos were ok, hopefully I managed to enter the pit before press and got some good shots of the rest of their set as well.
Cibelle @ El Plaza Condesa
March 9th, 2012
Some songs into the setlist, after the three songs we normally are allowed to photograph (that day I was shooting for the venue, so I could stay the whole show), Cibelle sang “Sad Piano”. She sat at the edge of the stage, right in front of me, and kept singing. That song was so calm that it even got to me in a soothing way, inspiring a quiet moment we rarely see at gigs. At first all I could think was to shoot as many photos as I could and later edit them, thinking one would come out great. Cibelle stood there and I stopped shooting bursts, I started thinking what I needed to get just one good shot. Breathe. She’s still there. Make some adjustments. Shoot again. Enough. For a while I stopped shooting, and it felt like it was just me with the best seat in the venue right in front of her. I could only admire her trying to feel this calm the song I’ve never heard before, from I artist I hadn’t heard before, made me feel.
That day ended in a very strange way, weird, bad, making me wishing to go back to those few minutes in which nothing mattered at all.
